According to Brownwood Police reports, Animal Control Officer Nick Ferguson was contacted on Saturday March 6, 2010 by the Animal Cruelty Investigator from the Corrine T. Smith Animal Shelter to make him aware of an ongoing cruelty investigation.  The investigator indicated that there was a pit bull mix on Golding Road that was very thin.  The owner was contacted and asked about the dog and claimed that the dog just wasn’t eating according to the police report.  The owner brought the dog in to the animal shelter and signed a release form.

After the owner left, the animal cruelty investigator then attempted to feed the dog a can of prescription food, which the dog according to reports, “readily ate a ½ of the can at that time”.

Further noted in the report, on March 7, the dog was taken to the Small Animal Clinic for a checkup.  The dog’s body condition score was very low, the veterinarian’s opinion stated, “The dog is extremely emaciated.  Certainly intestinal parasitism plays a major role.  Probable poor quality and/or limited diet contributes to presenting body score.  Dog readily ate ½ can of prescription diet and then stopped as though full, lending credence to the possibility of long term underfeeding by the dog’s previous owner.”

It was documented in the police reports that both the animal cruelty investigator and the animal control officer believed the owner of this dog “failed unreasonably to provide necessary food, water, care or shelter for an animal in the person’s custody.” Authorities are continuing their investigation.
