LECSmAfter racing down a busy city street in Early Monday night, two men were arrested according to Early Police Chief David Mercer.

While on patrol, Early Police Officer Andre Smoot observed two vehicles sitting at the red light on Early Blvd. and US Hwy 183 South which were running their accelerators loudly back and forth with each other at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 30th, according to Mercer.  When the light changed to green, both vehicles began racing each other as they traveled east on Early Blvd., and at one point one vehicle tried to cut the other off, said Mercer.

Officer Smoot got behind both vehicles and attempted to make a stop on both, according to Mercer. The red vehicle pulled into a convenience store in the 1300 block of Early Blvd. and the other kept going, according to Mercer’s report. The officer motioned for the vehicle to stay there as he pursued the other; however, when Officer Smoot caught the white car and began bringing him back to the convenience store the red car was attempting to leave. Again Smoot told the driver to stay at the store while he caught the red car and brought them back, according to Mercer.

The drivers, identified as 22-year-old Braxton Sadberry of Deleon and 24-year-old Jose Salcido of Bentonville, Arkansas, admitted to attempting to race each other, said Mercer. Neither driver knew the other driver and had just met at the red light according to the report.

Both Sadberry and Salcido were placed under arrest for racing, a class B misdemeanor.
