LECSmBrownwood Police responded to the 3200 block of Milam Drive Thursday morning regarding a burglary of the concessions stands at Gordon Wood Stadium.  According to the report, the main concession stand was broken into and $2000 stolen from a safe.  Other concession stands at the stadium were also burglarized; however only food items were taken or consumed from the other stands.

According to Brownwood High School Band Boosters president Rita Dodson, the money was proceeds from concessions sales during the Howard Payne homecoming game.  Band students had manned the booth and worked to earn the $2000 which is used for end of the year band trips, travel costs to competitions, and purchasing equipment according to Dodson.

“It’s a blow, but we will be able to keep going.  I just hate that it affects the kids,” Dodson stated.  “The work, the hours alongside parent volunteers to fund the program.  That’s the part that hurts the most – they took from our kids.”

Dodson stated that usually the money is removed after each event; however Saturday, the band was running a tight schedule to get to the Heart of Texas Marching Festival in Early right after the game.  The money was left to be picked up at a later time, said Dodson.  According to officials, the concession stand has multiple layers of gates and locks that made boosters think the money was safe; however the thieves kicked in a rollup type door to gain access.

Dodson also stated that it looked to her that it could have been teenagers because the thieves bagged up some candy and Fritos and took some Dr. Peppers, even rearranged the sodas in the coolers, so that they weren’t in order.  They rummaged through cabinets and seemed to have stumbled across the cabinet with the safe full of cash and left quickly, said Dodson.

There were no arrests and no known suspects at the time of the report; however the investigation is ongoing.
