veneta-nolen-pictureVeneta Newby Nolen passed from this life on December 4, 2016 at 8:45 p.m. surrounded by her family. Veneta was born on December 17, 1931 in Lohn, Texas to Archie & Versie Myers Newby.

She married L.H. Nolen in San Saba in 1950. Together they raised three children and were blessed with 55 years of marriage before being parted by her husband’s death in January 2006. She lived in Richland Springs for many years before moving to Brownwood in 1977, where she lived until her death.

Veneta was a strong, faithful Christian and a member of the Fourth and Stewart church of Christ. She was very active in the church, providing meals, teaching children’s class, and hosting visiting preachers. Veneta was always a hard worker and held many jobs outside the home over the years. She was the last telephone operator in Lake Victor, Texas. She managed The 5 Hills Motel in Copperas Cove. She was a hostess at Grandy’s and Long John Silver’s in Brownwood. Veneta always loved children and provided child care for many over the years, both in her home and when she worked at Little Dude Ranch in Brownwood. She lived for God and was a blessing to her family, whom she loved so very much.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three children; two sons, Mike Nolen & wife Karen of Hewitt , Stephen Nolen of Brownwood; one  daughter, Patti Nolen Bannister & husband Mike of Brownwood; five grandchildren, Christopher Nolen, Jeffrey Nolen, and Melissa Nolen of Hewitt,  James Nolen of Brownwood, Micah Bannister Lampson & husband Christopher of Middletown, Pennsylvania; one great granddaughter, Addison Lynn Lampson of Middletown, Pennsylvania; one sister, Loveta Lewis & husband Robert of Richland Springs; one nephew, Darwin Lewis & wife Patty of San Saba; one niece, Melody Lewis Rowell & husband Michael of Owasso, Oklahoma; and two great nephews, Mark Lewis of New Hampshire, and Robert Rowell of Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her husband L.H. Nolen; her parents, Archie & Versie Newby; two brothers, Leroy Newby and Harold Dwain Newby; and one niece Deborah Lynn Newby.

Funeral Services for Veneta will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016, at 4th and Stewart St. Church of Christ with Johnny McCaghren officiating; burial will follow at Greenleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.
