Brownwood Mayor Bert V. Massey II was honored Tuesday night at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet with the year’s top award, the Groner Pitts “Lifetime of Service” Award. Massey now joins only three other past recipients of the honor including Stuart Coleman, Putter Jarvis, and J. Fred Perry.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Massey said that he was honored to be mentioned in the same breath as Groner Pitts along with the previous winners.
Massey was also recognized with a presentation from State Congressman Jim Keffer and State Senator Troy Fraser along with comments from Hilary Stegemoller on behalf of US Representative Mike Conaway.
Although it was the highlight of the evening, Massey was not the only Brownwood resident to be honored at the banquet. Thirteen awards were handed out to individuals and businesses that went above and beyond.
Man of the year was awarded to Frank Hilton for his participation in several historical organizations and his tireless efforts which are keeping the history of Brownwood alive.
Woman of the year was given to Ann Jones who stays busy on countless committees and boards. Most notably is the recently established Workforce Education Committee.
