The Girl Scouts of Central Texas recently partnered with Wendlee Broadcasting to bring “A Taste of Home for our Troops” to our community. Through the help of local businesses and individuals, Girl Scout Cookies will be sent to military troops both stateside and abroad.
Nancy King with the Girl Scouts of Central Texas joined VFW Auxiliary members at the Post as they packed up boxes of cookies, letters and cards of encouragement and thanks for the troops. 29 boxes of 10-12 packages of cookies were packed up on Tuesday morning.According to Joyce Leidig, VFW Mlitary and Family Support Committee member, 18 cases of cookies are being sent this Friday to military members that have ties to the Brown County and Coleman County area. With the help of May ISD 6th graders, each of the troops will also receive a handmade card with a message of thanks from the students.
Leidig stated that when families contact the VFW about their family members serving in the military, the VFW tries to help in any way they can to help show them support.
“We try to do what we can to show them the community back home supports them and appreciates their service,” said Leidig. “The troops really appreciate care packages. It’s not what you send, but that you take time to send something.”
Margaret Kirby, another member of the Military and Family Support Committee, stated that those receiving care packages often share with the other troops.
Kirby and Leidig stated that the VFW and its Auxiliary help with these types of projects whenever possible, stating, “We do it because we love and support all of our military. All of us at the VFW have a special connection to the military, either we have served or have a family member who has served.”
A note from the VFW was enclosed with each box that read, “Thank you for proudly serving in the United States Military! We salute you for your sacrificial service at home and abroad. May God bless and protect you as you faithfully serve our nation. We will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. If there is anything we can do for you your family, or those you serve with, please let us know.”
