Brownwood High School announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the BHS Class of 2013 during their annual academic awards ceremony on Monday, May 20th.
Alex Hernandez, Jr. was named Valedictorian and Meredith Underwood was named Salutatorian. Pictured above (left to right) are Underwood and Hernandez.
Alex Hernandez, Jr., valedictorian, is the son of Tonya & Les Taylor and Alex Hernandez, Sr. He has participated in UIL basketball and debate. Hernandez also served as parliamentarian, treasurer and current president of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). He is also on the BHS Student Council serving as the vice president, while also a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and Spanish Club.
Throughout his high school career, he has earned many honors and awards such as summa cum laude, dual credit physics, geography, medical terminology, pharmacy tech and the health science departmental awards.
Hernandez will graduate as a Lone Star Scholar with 33 dual credit hours and plans to take his state certification exam in June to become a pharmacy technician while in college. He plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall majoring in biology and general science. After completing his undergraduate work, Hernandez plans to attend vet school to become a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM). He enjoys playing sports and traveling and hopes to incorporate those into his future as well.

Meredith Underwood, salutatorian, is the daughter of Paul and Jill Underwood and sister to last year’s valedictorian, Sarah Underwood.
Throughout Meredith’s high school career, she has participated in many extracurricular activities including acapella choir, band and drill team. However, it was in the theatre department, under the “superb” direction of Larry Mathis, where she found her true calling.
On the BHS stage, Meredith performed such roles as “Laurey” in Oklahoma!, the “Wicked Witch of the West” in The Wizard of Oz and “Peter Pan” in Peter Pan. In the 2013 One Act Play competition season, Meredith garnered the Best Actress Award at the district and area levels. She was inducted into the National Honor Society her junior year and is a member of the First United Methodist Church Brownwood. Upon graduation, Meredith plans to move to Los Angeles to attend American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) to major in Musical Theatre. She hopes one day to perform in New York on Broadway.

The motto of the BHS Class of 2013 is “faber est quisque fortunae suae – Every man is an architect of his own fortune.”
Brownwood High School commencement will be held on Friday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Brownwood Coliseum.
