Written by Ben Cox – The Brownwood Lyric Theatre will be premiering their latest production, Crimes of the Heart this weekend. The show opens on rFriday at 7:30 p.m. with seven other performances over the course of this weekend and next.
The play tells the story of the three Magrath sister, Meg played by Karen Myers, Babe played by Cassia Rose, and Lenny played by Brittany Martin, who are thrown back together in the family’s Mississippi home after Babe shoots her husband.

The sisters cousin Chick, played by Stephanie Brownlee, lives next door, and inserts herself involved in the family drama. Lenny’s ex-boyfriend Doc Porter is played by Jaden Cox, and Caleb Bostik plays Babe’s lawyer Barnette.

The story unfolds in the family kitchen, as Lenny faces her seemingly permanent single-ness, Meg comes to grips with her failed singing career in California, and Babe is freshly released on bail. Babe must also contend with the growing affections of her lawyer, who tries to keep her out of jail and get her into his life.

Audiences will sympathize, commiserate, and laugh along with the comedic drama as the Magrath women handle the Crimes of the Heart they have each committed in their past. Prepare to enjoy a variety of emotions as the skilled players of the Brownwood Lyric stage deliver this 1981 Pulitzer Prize winning script.

The play then also released as a 1986 feature film starring starring Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, and Sam Shepard. The film was nominated for several Golden Globes as well as Academy Awards, with Sissy Spacek winning the Best Actress Golden Globe .

The play is direct by well known director and performer Larry Mathis, and Stage Managed by Lyric veteran Kris Henry. Performances are at 7:30 on the 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th, and at 2:30 on the 19th, 20th, 25th, and 27th.
