Brownwood teams saw mixed results in the first day of the 14U Texas State Teenage Baseball state tournament which is being held at the Massey Sports Complex in Brownwood this week.
The Brownwood Flying Squirrels faced the Riesel Indians Monday morning and suffered a 14-4 loss. Five pitchers tried their hand at stopping the Indians without success. The game ended in five innings after the Indians’ lead grew evoking the 10 point rule.
The Flying Squirrels will return to the field at 9:30 am Tuesday against the Cameron Red Sox in the elimination bracket.
The Brownwood Yankees were the victors in their tournament opener against the Cameron Red Sox in a 7-6 battle Monday evening. A struggle between the two teams trading off runs until the Yankees took the lead in the top of the fifth and held it through the remainder of the game. The Yankees will face the Edgewood Titans Tuesday night.
Local teams made a good showing for the opening of the TTAB 8U Player Pitch state tournament being held in Early this week. The Early Diamondbacks took down the Copperas Cove Pirates 9-5 on Monday advancing to the next round. Early Cardinals also came out the winner in the championship bracket with a no-show by challenger Copperas Cove White Sox. The Early Diamondbacks and the Early Cardinals will now face each other on Tuesday at 8 pm at Early City Park.
