Brownwood News – There is a new “hidden gem” in Central Texas these days. Woody’s Classic Cars and Baseball Museum opened earlier this year in Cross Plains, Texas.
The museum is named after local resident Danny Lee Wood, who passed away in 2016, but throughout his life amassed quite a collection of classic cars and baseball memorabilia. After his passing, his wife Patti decided to build a museum to showcase his collection and share it with the world.
The 22,000 square-foot building is thoughtfully designed and the collection is professionally displayed. Here you will find over two dozen classic cars, from a Ford Model T, to a Willys Jeep, to a 1964-1/2 Ford Mustang, Cadillacs, muscle cars… Well, you get the picture!
And the baseball collection is something to see also. Memorabilia and signed items from Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb to Mickey Mantle, Nolan Ryan, Pudge Rodriguez, and up to current players like Jose Altuve and Adrian Beltre. Even the restrooms get in the act, the Ladies Room décor is in Texas Rangers colors, and the Men’s Room is in Houston Astros colors.
Woody’s includes a 1950’s style diner. No food is served or sold in the diner, but visitors and groups who make prior arrangements can bring sack lunches and enjoy them in the atmosphere of the 50’s diner.
The museum is located at 500 SW Fifth St, Hwy 36 West, in Cross Plains. Hours are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Admission to the museum is free. The gift shop next door (in a converted Texaco filling station!) has shirts, caps, coffee mugs, etc. for sale. All the proceeds, however, are donated to charity. Woody’s keeps no money. The gift shop also has a collection of Christian books, all of which are free.
