Woodrow Jackson “Jack” Low, age 96, of Brownwood went to meet the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 24, 1923 in San Saba the son of Wood Lee Low and Sarah L. Jackson Low.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, and brothers, Waydene, Don, Frazier and Joe.
He is survived by a very loving family including his sister, Judy Pittman and husband Johnny of Nederland, his brother Jerry Low and wife Helen of Brownwood, two daughters, Lisa Gleason and husband David of Brownwood and Jacqueline Klaus and husband Joe of Buda, four grandchildren, Tara Craven and husband Aaron of Copperas Cove, Sara Johnson and husband J.D. of Brownwood, Lauren and Zachary Klaus of Buda, six great-grandchildren, Kennedi, Nixon, Lincoln, and Reagan Johnson, Bailey Gleason, and Cooper Craven. Two sister-in-laws, Nelda Low and Doris Low of Brownwood and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was raised in a working family around San Saba but later moved to the Brownwood area prior to World War II where he spent two years working at Camp Bowie learning several crafts, choosing water purification as a career. At the start of the war he was inducted into the Army where his job was to provide purified water. He spoke often of his war efforts which included several South Pacific island battles, and later the occupation of surrendered Japan. After the war, Jack returned to Brownwood where he graduated from Howard Payne University with a teaching degree. His first teaching job was at May Independent Schools where he met and married his wife, Mildred Windham. They were married on August 17, 1953 in Bend, Texas and was married for 60 years. For the next thirty-two years, Jack taught school at Brownwood, mainly teaching seventh grade math along with driving a school bus and various coaching duties. During summer break, he delivered freight for Yellow Freight, ETMF, and Central Freight Lines.
Jack had a passion for John Deere Tractors and was well known for his collection of antique tractors that he was extremely proud of.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 18, at the Davis-Morris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bill Slaymaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenleaf Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 pm at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 17.
