Woodland_toys_for_kidsMrs. Karey Morelock’s second grade class at Woodland Heights Elementary in Brownwood made a donation to Toys for Kids on Friday, Dec. 18.  The idea came from a class discussion on Monday, Dec. 14, about the meaning of Christmas.  Students were listing what Christmas meant to them, and “giving kept coming up,” said Mrs. Morelock.

Then the class made a list of ways they could give.  The class decided to collect change, and from Tuesday through Thursday, they brought in $51.05.  Collecting change fit in perfectly with the class curriculum, as they had just been learning how to count change.  Thursday evening, Mrs. Morelock purchased toys with the money the students had collected.

On Friday, Dec. 18, the students presented the toys to Keith Hetzel, representing Toys for Kids.  “Considering the times we are in, it is amazing that our community has come together for the children in our area,” said Hetzel.  He continued by saying, “Over and over I have seen our community come together for our kids, and not just for the Toys for Kids, but for other organizations like the Boys and Girls Club.”  Surrounded by Mrs. Morelock’s second grade class and the toys they gave, Hetzel smiled and thanked the children for making a difference with their contribution.

Hetzel said donations to Toys for Kids come from every segment in the community, from individual donations, businesses, civic clubs, and youth organizations.
