Woodland Heights Elementary School celebrated Cinco de Mayo, Tuesday, May 5th. This is the fourth year Woodland Heights has recognized the celebration of Hispanic culture and traditions.
“This year we had donations from Brookshire’s and Mi Familia,” stated Woodland Heights Elementary teacher, Nereida Ceniceros. “We are truly blessed to have a wonderful set of parents that donated food, time and supplies.”Brownwood High School students from Mrs. Soto and Mrs. Cockerham’s classes volunteered to help at the event, and Mrs. Mendoza’s Spanish class from Bangs High School also contributed by sending decorations.
“This year in the ‘Salon de Musica’ the children were able to listen to different types of Mexican music including Banda and Conjunto,” noted Ceniceros. “In the ‘Restaurante’ students were able to taste taquitos, rice, tamales, and enchiladas to list a few.”
Students also learned how to make homemade corn tortillas at a station set up in the school library. “Many thanks to Gloria Valenciano and her crew for making
tortillas all day for the students,” said Ceniceros.
