The Brownwood Police Department confirmed that one woman died in a house fire on the corner of 7th Street and Brady Avenue early Saturday morning.
The Brownwood Fire Department responded to the fire call shortly after midnight Saturday to find that the home was fully engulfed in flames and a report that one person was still in the house. One other woman was in the house when the fire started but escaped without injury. The woman that escaped was a neighbor who was visiting and fell asleep.
Investigators believe that the woman who died attempted to put out the fire herself and was overcome by smoke. The cause of the fire is unknown as of Saturday morning, but authorities are investigating the incident and seeking other witnesses.
Shocked neighbors from the area were visibly upset as they learned of the fatality. Police and fire investigators are not releasing the identity of the deceased woman until her next of kin have been contacted.
