Art lovers of all ages may view the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit February 5-17 at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center located at 600 E. Depot in Brownwood. Show hours are Monday-Friday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Artwork that did not make the Stars of Texas Art Exhibit will be featured in the Salon des Refuses at the Brownwood Art Association Art Center, located at 215 Fisk Street during the above hours.

Demonstrations will also take place each day during exhibit hours from a variety of artists. There is no charge to enter the exhibit or attend the demonstrations.

Wednesday’s Artists:

1. Susan Stepp: I am a retired high school art teacher that has enjoyed viewing and creating art in all forms and with all media for all of my life. It started with a notebook of sketches in elementary school. I have done commission work, including portraits and calligraphy, and taught art on many levels.

I discovered Zentangles at a Texas Art Educators conference in Galveston in 2010. It is described as an “easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.” I brought the idea back to my art students at Comanche High School. It was probably the most successful of all the projects I did with the majority of the students. You now see something similar to Zentangle patterns in the vast array of adult coloring books for sale everywhere. But just coloring a pattern is not nearly as satisfying as creating your own Zentangle designs; and in my experience, everyone can be successful in creating designs—even the most “artistically challenged.”

My demonstration will be a hands-on creation of several Zentangle patterns. Visitors will be able to take the patterns they create with them.

2. Claudette West Womack: Pastel Painting – I have drawn as long as I can remember. I took private art lessons in Odessa, and Brownwood. I have a BFA in Art from Stephen F Austin University and taught public school art for several years. Also, I am currently teaching art to children at the Art Center on Tuesdays: 215 Fisk Avenue in Brownwood. I plan to host a demonstration for children with tempura called Blottos, teaching symmetry.

3. Lark Terry: Soap Making – Lark Terry is a resident of Early, Texas with her husband Aaron and their four children. Lark and Aaron are owners of Arrows & Oaks which offers many types of different bath products. Their main focus however is their goat milk soaps and lotions, using fresh milk from their own Nubian goats. They chose to use goat milk because of the incredible properties it has being rich in nutrients and vitamins. They are also able source shea butter directly from the women processing it in Ghana, Africa which adds a luxurious touch to their products. They love knowing that their business is helping to provide income for women in Ghana while also increasing the quality of their products.
