Wednesday’s Artists:
1. Jeanette Long: Paper Mache – As a child growing up in the farming community of Lemitar, New Mexico, Jeanette was greatly influenced by the simple charm and beauty of country life. When Jeanette was a teenager she and her family relocated to the Brown County area and presently live in the country north of Brownwood.
Jeanette crafts many things from all types of wood, fabric, clay, dried and silk flowers, etc., but one of her great loves has always been miniatures. You can see in her home spun miniatures that her ideal is family and the quiet country life.
Jeanette’s “Farm Folks” dolls as well as the animals, the tiny vegetables, and all of the miniature props are patterned after the tradition handed down through generations of love for things “hand made”.
2. Suzanne Starr: Caligraphy – Suzanne Starr, now of Abilene, and originally from Haskell says a great deal of her calligraphy is done with gouache on 90 lb watercolor paper. She also does letter with inks and acrylics on canvas, wood, and other surfaces.
“After a life-time of doodling, my first true calligraphy class was in the early 1970’s, in Borger, Texas. Because I had 4 children under the age of 7 at that time, there was little time for practice. So, my lettering was very infrequent and un-polished,” says Starr.
Nearly 15 years later, with very little more time, Starr agreed to address some wedding invitations for a lady who shopped in her mother’s retail business. That got “the pen started.” From then on, she spent more and more time lettering for gifts, weddings, and finally some commission work.
3. Christopher Gaston: GeometricArt – Christopher is a local Brownwood artist who specializes in a number of varied digital techniques to create his own distinctive style of art. He is currently teaching high school math at Victory Life Academy and is coordinating student involvement in the state art competition. Christopher donates 100% of art sale revenues to Make Way Partners to help aid in the fight against human trafficking around the globe.
