Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3278 and the Ladies’ & Men’s Auxiliary will observe the sinking of the Battleship Maine, February 15, 1898, which marked the beginning of the escalation to war with Spain over Cuban Independence.
The observance will be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, February 13 at the VFW Post. The Post is located at 2300 Stephen F. Austin in Brownwood.The war with Spain propelled the United States onto the world stage as well as liberating Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and The Philippines Islands.
USS “Maine,” after entering Havana Harbor on January 25, 1898, the ship sank just weeks later on February 15th under unusual circumstances starting the Spanish American War.
