Brownwood News – VFW Post 3278 has pledged their financial support for the upcoming Texas Amputee Golf Championship to be held June 24–25th at the Hideout Golf Club near Lake Brownwood.
“With the Texas Amputee Golf Championship honoring amputee soldiers from conflicts dating back to Viet Nam, this golf championship is an event made for the VFW,” explained James Masters, Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3278.
“Our mission at the VFW is to serve our veterans. With so many of our young soldiers returning home dismembered and with our local VFW looking for ways to assist veterans, we saw the Texas Amputee Golf Championship as another opportunity to financially support a special event involving veterans,” he said.
“Almost every day there is something on television about our wounded warriors because so many of them have come home facing a new life challenge as an amputee. This tournament not only offers them a venue, but it has established a program to give our amputee warriors golf lessons. It is another way to help honor and empower them,” added the local VFW Post 3278 Commander.
Denise Hudson with the Early Convention & Tourism Bureau was quick to recognize the contributions from the VFW to this area.
“The VFW always seems to be there when Early/Brownwood needs them. One of their latest projects was bringing The Moving Wall to Camp Bowie. There is a tremendous expense to moving that huge Wall around the country. The VFW and other veterans’ groups stepped up and provided the financial backing needed,” said Hudson.
“It was so inspiring and emotional to be there, standing in front of that huge Wall listening to other veterans tell stories about soldiers whose name were all on wall and their service time together. There was a lot of laughing and crying,” she said. “Being a part of bringing The Moving Wall to Camp Bowie speaks volumes about our local VFW. And now they’re doing their part again to bring the Texas Amputee Golf Championship to Lake Brownwood.”
The championship is a two-day tournament, Saturday and Sunday (June 24th and 25th). After Saturday’s round, the tournament will be flighted. Golfers with the best scores from Saturday’s round will compete in Sunday’s Championship Flight. All golfers will be flighted based on their Saturday score.
There is an optional practice round scheduled for Friday, June 23rd.
“Any golfer who is an amputee or mobile impaired is welcome to play in the tournament,” said the Tournament Director, Roy McCoy.
“We have had tremendous support from Brownwood and Early. With this type of financial support, we have lowered the entry fee to only $50 and this is a bargain for two days of golf on one of the finest golf layouts in the State of Texas. The Hideout Golf Club is a showplace,” explained McCoy.
