VFW Post 3278 Auxiliary is updating their Wall of Heroes at the Brown County Courthouse and invites the public to submit a picture to display of their loved ones who are actively serving in the U.S. Military.
Auxiliary members place a copy of photos of each military member, along with their name, military branch and where they are stationed or deployed.Joyce Leidig and Debbie Daniel worked on the Wall of Heroes Monday morning and stated that the wall helps to remind the public of the sacrifices of the troops and their families, to “put a local face with our military.” Although this is a local effort to recognize active duty military, photos of any active duty military, no matter where they are from are accepted. Leidig stated that the VFW Auxiliary believes all troops of every branch are important and they need to know that they are supported at home.
“We don’t stop at the county line,” said Leidig, “They are all heroes.”
The Wall of Heroes currently displays the photos of 72 active military members, 6 of which are deploying in the next 2-3 months.
Leidig and Daniel explained that the auxiliary supports the troops (even those stateside) throughout the year with care packages. The most recent of which were 30 boxes filled with packages of Girl Scout Cookies. Boxes are sent when families notify the VFW about their troop’s needs.
“We’ll be supporting them during deployment,” Leidig stated. “We send packages and encouragement when we can.”
Daniel and Leidig stated that many of the active duty troops are deployed right after boot camp.
Forms for the Wall of Heroes can be picked up at the Brown County Courthouse at the wall or obtained by emailing leidig@centex.net. The completed forms, along with a photo, can be returned by mail to Joyce Leidig, 6902 Donegal Drive, Brownwood, Texas 76801, by email to the above address or returned to the Brown County Clerk’s Office.
