Veta “June” Chitwood, former longtime Brownwood resident, was born June 27, 1926 in Ringwood, OK to Anna Young Ritter and Herbert Ray Ritter, Sr.  She left her earthly home in her 90th year surrounded by three generations of her loving family by her side on January 9, 2016 in New Braunfels, TX. The Ritter family moved to Enid, OK and after June’s high school graduation at Ringwood, she joined them and was introduced to a soldier at Enid’s Vance Army Air Force Base. After a transfer and a proposal, Miss Ritter married Alwyn E. “Al” Chitwood in Champlain, Ill in 1945.
June and Al moved to Brownwood in 1963 with their children Al and Gayle. June was a model homemaker, wife, mother, friend, neighbor and friend to their children’s friends. She was very active at First Baptist Church in GA’s, her Sunday School Class, and babysitting the choir members’ kids. She always claimed that when she auditioned for the choir, Dwain Blakley assigned her to the section in the gym with the kids. Her sense of humor was as refreshing as her smile. After her taxi service was no longer needed at home, she accepted a half time position with Texas Department of Child Protective Services. She retired after 18 years. June and Al enjoyed BHS football during the Wood/Southall era especially when their son played. They loved Lake Brownwood, fishing, skiing, and just sitting on their barge. June is well known for the ability to water ski without getting her hair wet, and did into her 70’s.
Upon retirement they spent summers going north and winters going south for 14 years. They loved traveling and the outdoors. June and Al enjoyed 58 years of marriage together. When Al’s health began to decline, they moved to New Braunfels to be closer to family. June lost her love to Alzheimer’s disease on September 9, 2003.
Family meant everything to June. She is survived by her son, Alwyn L. Chitwood, Sr. and wife Mary of Lake Buchanan, her daughter, Gayle Dobbs and husband Ronnie of New Braunfels; grandchildren Ashley Dobbs Benson and husband Jeremy of Murfreesboro, TN, Alwyn L. Chitwood, Jr. and wife Tina of New Braunfels, Jennifer Dobbs Dickerson of New Braunfels, and Katheryn Chitwood Hendrix and husband Cody of Lake Buchanan; great-grandchildren Taylor and Iver Benson, Lindsey, Abby Dobbs, Maggie, Elizabeth and Connor Hendrix; Mrs. Chitwood is survived by her little brother Jack Ritter and wife Pat of Enid, OK; baby sister Georgia Ann Lewellen of Temple (whom June renamed “Judy” at birth). She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Ray Ritter, Jr.
The family requests that any memorials be made to Sodalis Elder Living, 302 W. Cross St., New Braunfels, Texas 78130, a facility like none other that cares for residents with Alzheimer’s and similar diseases from early stage through end of life.
