Velma was born August 3, 1935, in Carbon, TX, to Melvin and Velma (Johnson) Maynard. She attended school and graduated as Valedictorian of Carbon High School. Velma and Charles R. Carson were married in Barksdale, TX on December 25, 1953. She loved to play softball and completed more than 25 years in the sport. In 1956, her team made it to the Women’s National Finals in Connecticut. Velma worked as a seamstress and owned her own business, working at home, making clothes, quilts, and taught the grandchildren to cross-stich, quilt, and embroidery. Velma was May resident for 25 plus years and a member of the First United Methodist Church of May.Velma loved playing all kinds of games, ‘42’, dominoes, and Wahoo with relatives, and going shopping with the grandkids and great-grandkids. She made time to cook, garden, can foods, and always had a “glass” of tea ready for when someone stopped by. Her cooking was used to help with fund raising for fire departments, baking cookies for the school, and making meals for the peanut farmers.
At the Oakridge Nursing Home, Velma had many friends and enjoyed being with them along with the staff, Rhonda, Barbara, Shirley, and Butch where she often visited about the Rangers, Cowboys, NASCAR or whatever else they could find to talk about. She hated to miss Bingo, enjoyed card making, the manicures and pedicures, and getting together for the once-a-month birthday parties.
Velma will be greatly missed as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor.
