UPDATE  Monday – 9:30 AM – Brownwood Police released the identity of the shooting victim of the  Sunday afternoon shooting homicide as 34-yr-old Ernesto Gonzales, Jr. of Brownwood.  Brownwood Police released the following information Monday morning:

On Sunday, November 2, 2014, around 4:15 PM officers of the Brownwood Police Department responded to the 1300 blk of Brady Ave after receiving a 911 call of gunfire in the area. 

Upon arrival, officers were directed to an adjacent alleyway where they discovered an unresponsive Hispanic male.  The male was later identified as 34-yr-old Ernesto Gonzales, Jr. of Brownwood.    Mr. Gonzales was deceased.

Detectives with the Brownwood Police Department Criminal Investigations Division were summoned to the scene and began their investigation.  They were assisted by members of the Early Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety.

Mr Gonzales’ body was transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office in Austin for an autopsy.

The investigation into this crime continues.  Any person having information of this crime is asked to contact the Brownwood Police Department at (325) 646-2525 or the Heart of Texas Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Brownwood Police stated that no suspects were in custody and no arrests had been made as police continue their investigation.  According to Brownwood Assistant Chief of Police James Fuller, witnesses and persons of interest were interviewed during the investigation Sunday, which is ongoing; however no arrest has been made.

Fuller did state that the investigation indicates that the shooting was an isolated incident and that the department did not feel that there was any threat to the public at this time.

Detectives worked through the night on the case, according to Fuller.

UPDATE Sunday – 9:30 PM – Brownwood Police released their first official statement regarding the shooting on Brady Avenue Sunday.  This statement confirms that a man was deceased because of a gunshot wound, but offers no further details at this time. More information regarding the incident is exepcted on Monday.  The police statement is below.

“On Sunday, November 02, 2014, around 4:15 PM officers of the Brownwood Police Department were dispatched to the 1300 blk of Brady Ave regarding a report of gunfire in the area.  Upon their arrival, a Hispanic male was discovered in an adjacent alleyway; having sustained a gunshot wound.  The male was deceased.

Detectives with the Brownwood Police Department Criminal Investigations Division arrived to assist in the investigation.

This is still an active investigation and every possible lead is being followed up on.”

Original Story: One man is dead after an apparent shooting Sunday afternoon on Brady Avenue in Brownwood.

Brownwood Police were dispatched to a residence at 4:12 PM Sunday to the report of gunshots and “a man on the ground in the alley” behind a house in the 1300 block of Brady Avenue, according to police scanner traffic at the time.

Brownwood Assistant Chief of Police James Fuller confirmed that one man was dead in the reported area and police were investigating.   Fuller would not confirm if the man died of gunshots, citing the active investigation.  Police were not releasing any further information other than they were investigating an active crime scene.
