In conjunction with Child Passenger Safety Week, TxDOT helped sponsor a child safety seat checkup event Tuesday afternoon in the First Baptist Church parking lot. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from TxDOT, KidSafe at Hillcrest (a program of the Regional Trauma Services at Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco) and other agencies inspected 36 child safety seats for proper use and functionality, and provided guidance to parents and other caregivers on how to properly restrain child passengers.
During the two-hour event, approximately a dozen car seats were found to be defective, recalled or expired and were replaced free of charge. Another five children were provided with booster seats.
