WillisCreekWideningProject2013

Construction on FM 2524 (Austin Avenue) is ramping up this week. Work crews are currently placing warning signs and traffic control devices as they begin work on storm drains and utilities.

According to officials, no lane closures are planned at this time, but drivers should be cautious of workers and equipment in the area. Drivers can expect to see a traffic shift during the summer.

The project will completely rehabilitate Austin Avenue from Norwood Street to Brooks Avenue by widening it to four lanes, as well as rebuilding and resurfacing the roadway and widening the bridge at Willis Creek. The project also includes storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and signals.

The widening of this portion of roadway and the Willis Creek Bridge is expected to help traffic flow and help with safety issues as drivers traveling southbound will no longer be forced to merge into one lane as they approach the currently two lane bridge.

The 1.026 mile project is being completed by Jay Mills Contracting, Incorporated.   The total cost of the project, according to TxDOT, is $4,712,099.43.  The project began in October of 2013 and is scheduled for completion in late 2015 according to TxDOT officials.
