Tuesday’s Artists:
1. Paula Vaughn: My name is Paula Vaughn and I reside in Comanche, Texas and I will be demonstrating in pastel. My mother told me I started drawing at age two, so I can definitely say I’ve been interested in art the vast majority of my life. I started lessons at age twelve with the late Carole Pyburn, and she introduced me to oils and pastels.
I went on to major in art at Cisco Junior College in Cisco and then earned a Bachelor of Science in Education with all-level certification in art at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) in San Marcos.
I taught one year in public school and then switched to home-taught private art lessons for adults and children.
Pastels have been my medium of choice for many years. It’s fast, the colors are bright, and there are no brushes to wash, but even then, I do enjoy working with oils on occasion. I enjoy a variety of subject matter, especially people.
I am often asked how I do what I do, and the only answer I have is that it’s a God-given ability. I’m constantly observing, constantly painting in my head, and I am so thankful for this gift.
2. Jacque Rider: Jacquelin Tipton Rider moved to Brownwood with her family in 1983. She will be demonstrating how to make papier-mâché monsters. Rider says, ” The cool thing about these monsters is that there is no wrong way to make them. They always turn out looking like monsters.” The technique of covering the monsters in cloth, to make them more durable, was developed by Dan Reeder, whose workshop Rider attended at a National Art Education Association convention in Galveston, Texas.
