Tuesday’s Artists:

1. Paula Vaughn: My name is Paula Vaughn and I reside in Comanche, Texas and I will be demonstrating in pastel. My mother told me I started drawing at age two, so I can definitely say I’ve been interested in art the vast majority of my life. I started lessons at age twelve with the late Carole Pyburn, and she introduced me to oils and pastels.

I went on to major in art at Cisco Junior College in Cisco and then earned a Bachelor of Science in Education with all-level certification in art at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) in San Marcos.

I taught one year in public school and then switched to home-taught private art lessons for adults and children.

Pastels have been my medium of choice for many years. It’s fast, the colors are bright, and there are no brushes to wash, but even then, I do enjoy working with oils on occasion. I enjoy a variety of subject matter, especially people.

I am often asked how I do what I do, and the only answer I have is that it’s a God-given ability. I’m constantly observing, constantly painting in my head, and I am so thankful for this gift.

2. Jacque Rider: Jacquelin Tipton Rider moved to Brownwood with her family in 1983. She will be demonstrating how to make papier-mâché monsters. Rider says, ” The cool thing about these monsters is that there is no wrong way to make them.  They always turn out looking like monsters.” The technique of covering the monsters in cloth, to make them more durable, was developed by Dan Reeder, whose workshop Rider attended at a National Art Education Association convention in Galveston, Texas.

Other media used by Rider include: acrylics, oils, oil pastels, graphite, ink, watercolor, markers, mixed media, printmaking, fiber arts, clay, reliefs, wire, wood, assemblages, mobiles, jewelry crafting, and amateur photography.  Basically, she works with anything that inspires her.
Growing up in Dallas and the North Texas area, Jacque Rider developed a passion for art. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and a lifetime all-level art teaching certificate through the University of Texas at Arlington. Later she earned her elementary – 8th grade teaching certificate from Howard Payne University. She taught 28 years for Early ISD until she retired last year, ending her career teaching art at Early Middle School.
As an art teacher, Rider said, ” I like to inspire my students to be true to themselves when they are creating. I want them to enjoy the creative process, but also think deeper about what they are producing. I hope to instill in them that their role as an artist reaches beyond the classroom and into giving back to their community.”
Rider is currently serving on the Art Council of Brownwood’s board and is a member of the Brownwood Art Association. She also serves on the Child Welfare Board of Brown County. Last fall she participated in the Artisan Market of Brownwood. She is on the Altar Guild of St. John’s Church and helps monthly with their Food Pantry. She practices yoga and TaiChi so that she can keep up with her two young grandsons of Crowley, Texas and her five great-nephews of Brownwood.
3. Kathryn Jones: Kathryn Jones is a native of San Antonio, in 2009 she moved to Brownwood with her husband Lane. She was immediately introduced to the Brownwood Art Association becoming an active member, served as a Board Member and currently on several committees.
Kathryn is a multi-medium artist working with acrylics, watercolor, pastels, pencil. Although she has never had any formal training in art she found herself teaching at several schools in her hometown. That experience drew her out of her comfort zone to study books and magazines in order to demonstrate the techniques to her students. This lead to several of her former students to win awards at local art contest. Although she claims to be a master of none she has credited her multi-medium interest to the wide variety of the local artist who have demonstrated their talents each year at the Stars of Texas.
She has demonstrated for the Stars of Texas for the past 4 years demonstrating marbleizing with watercolors and 3d Christmas Ornaments. Kathryn will be demonstrating how to paint on clay flower pots using hand and foot prints that is sure to be a favorite for families by adding a twist to creating memories that will be treasured for a lifetime. They provide a great Mother’s Day Gift or end of year Teacher Gift. Kathryn volunteered to paint a 55gallon Rain Barrel with the local children as a fund raiser for the Community Gardener’s Club that was raffled off.
