Brownwood News – What do a toaster, a cell phone, and an air conditioning unit have in common? They all need electricity to keep running.
Electricity has become the backbone of the world we know today, and Texas State Technical College is preparing the next generation of electrical engineers and technicians to keep the lights on. “There is a huge need for people in this industry, locally and throughout the state, because there is a whole generation of technicians preparing to retire,” Kevin Staton, a TSTC Electrical Power and Controls instructor, said.
Staton started working in the industry in 1985 and said he loves sharing his knowledge with his students. “Somebody helped me so I could get where I am today, and I think it is important to give back and help these students be prepared for a career that can take them far. It’s very fulfilling, and it is my goal to make them the most well-rounded employees they can be,” Staton said.
Graduates of TSTC’s EPC program are equipped with skills for jobs including electrical engineering and design, installation and calibration, maintenance, testing and troubleshooting, computer instrumentation, robotic interfacing, and electrical construction. “We have so many employers looking at our students … that are ready to hire because they respect the TSTC name and they need quality employees,” Staton said.
The EPC program qualifies for TSTC’s Money-Back Guarantee, which states that if a student does not get a job in their degree field within six months of graduation, then they will have their tuition money refunded.
