Press Release to Brownwood News – Candy Curty had been a tax professional for nine years when she wanted a change.
“I worked as a tax professional for 9 1/2 years,” Curty said. “I was just kind of tired and done and wanted something different. I wanted something where I could make money and travel. My husband and I hoped one day to be able to travel and be able to have income at the same time, so we didn’t have to wait until we were retired.”
Curty’s friend suggested medical transcribing.
“A friend of mine told me, ‘You should go back to school. Be a transcriptionist; they travel,'” Curty said. So Curty began classes at Texas State Technical College in the Health Information Technology program.
“The experience at TSTC helped to build me,” Curty said. “It helped me to realize that I can learn new things and that I can do this. It’s been like 23 years since I graduated high school, so I was apprehensive about whether I could even accomplish going back to school, if I was smart enough, so to say. TSTC has helped me all around.”
Monday, Curty will join 150 other graduates in walking the stage at TSTC’s fall commencement ceremony. She will speak, representing the Brownwood campus. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center.
According to O*NET OnLine, Texas expects a 30 percent increase in jobs for medical records and health information technicians over the next eight years. TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Technology and a Medical Office Specialist certificate.
TSTC offers specialized, hands-on instructional courses leading to Associate of Applied Science degrees and Certificates of Completion in areas such as chemical dependency counseling, emergency medical services, software & business management accounting, welding and more.
