Trudy Abernathy, age 95, of Rockwood, died Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at the Bangs Nursing Home.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 13, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman.

Graveside funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 14 at the Whon Cemetery with Pastor Cole Farmer officiating.  Interment will follow in the Whon Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Mattie Gertrude Clifton on January 1, 1924 in Millersview, Texas, a daughter of Roy Clifton and Lelphie Goehring Clifton, and was always known as Trudy.  She grew up in Millersview where she attended school, graduating from Millersview High School in 1941.  On December 1, 1943 she married Lee Eldridge Abernathy in San Angelo and he preceded her in death on April 10, 2014.   Following their marriage and his honorable discharge from the Army, they settled in the Rockwood area in 1946.   She worked as a supervisor at Ginright Sewing Factory for many years and was also a homemaker.  She was a member of Rockwood Baptist Church.  Trudy was a talented lady who enjoyed and excelled at quilting, painting, sewing and cooking.  She loved her family and doted on her grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Rickey Abernathy of Whon;  one daughter, Linda Rutherford and husband Larry of Rockwood; six grandsons, Randy Rutherford and wife Lisa of Tomball, Troy Abernathy and wife Lisa of Whon, Todd Rutherford and wife Casi of Zephyr, Mark Rutherford and wife Jennifer of Highland Village, Tim Abernathy of Rockwood and Tony Abernathy of Bangs; six great-grandchildren, Carter Lee Rutherford, Gunter Todd Rutherford, Jordan Rutherford, Taylor Rutherford, Riley Abernathy and Johnny Abernathy; one sister and brother-in-law, Oma and John McCarthy of Mineral Wells; one brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Debbie Clifton of Doole.

Pallbearers will be her six grandsons, Randy Rutherford, Troy Abernathy, Todd Rutherford, Mark Rutherford, Tim Abernathy and Tony Abernathy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister and brother-in-law, Rene and Robert Carter.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Whon Cemetery Association, c/o 6732 FM 2633, Santa Anna, Texas 76878 or the donor’s favorite charity.

Trudy was dearly loved and we mourn her loss.  She has gone to be with family that are in the presence of God.  The family would especially like to thank Solaris Hospice Care for their constant treatment and care and special thanks to Bobby, Dawn, Caitlin and Sandra.
