No one was injured, but a couple count themselves lucky as they escaped just before their vehicle caught fire after getting $10 of gas at the Allsup’s on W. Commerce in Brownwood around 3pm Tuesday. The Brownwood Fire Department responded to the fire and extinguished it quickly.
Stanley and Angel Skinner of Brownwood just purchased the 1979 Chevy Silverado pickup only two months ago, registered it at the courthouse this morning, and were getting gas on their way to have it inspected when they heard a funny pop under the hood. The pickup backfired and then they could smell smoke.
Mr. Skinner reported that he got out of the pickup and saw smoke, and then opened the hood to find it on fire. The truck was pushed away from the gas pumps for safety, and then firefighters hosed down the engine and dash.
“It was road ready,” stated Stanley. “I don’t know what happened, I’m just glad it’s out.”
No injuries were reported.
