Troy Compton, age 88, of Brownwood, formerly of Midland, TX passed away March 2, 2017, in his home at Care Nursing. Troy was born on April 19, 1928, to David Edward Compton and Mary Elizabeth Underwood Compton. He was born at 10 am in his parents’ home in Norton, TX. He was the youngest of 5 children.

At the age of 7, Troy helped his parents run the telephone switchboard. The switchboard was in his room and he answered all the nighttime calls. World War II was going on when he was 16. Because so many men were gone, he helped out by starting the broiler at school, driving the bus, and cleaning the school, while he played football and basketball.

After high school he enlisted in the Navy; he served 3 years and was honorable discharged. He returned home and his mother insisted that he attend college.   He was a proud Texas Tech Red Raider. While attending Tech, he met Margaret Ham; they dated for a while and then eloped. Troy and Margaret had three daughters: Terri, Jeanette, and Sheryl. He made the most important decision of his life when he was baptized on the same day as his oldest daughter, Terri. He graduated with a BS in Petroleum Engineering. He went to work for Hanley Oil Co. in 1955 and retired from there in 1994.  He and Margaret also were Antique Dealers until the death of Margaret in 1999.

July 2000, He married Margaret Coon and they lived in Scurry, TX, until they divorced in 2012. Troy moved to Brownwood to be near his daughter, Sheryl Corley.

Troy loved the outdoors. He spent some time as a deer hunting guide, he said “He liked that better than shooting the deer”. He loved the lake, waterskiing, and fishing. He loved to whistle a tune and you could hear it all over the house. He also loved to tinker with things and his biggest tinkering was building his lake house. His engineering mind helped him to be able to fix just about anything.

Troy is survived by two daughters, Terri Compton Dahlstrom and husband Tim, Sheryl Compton Corley and husband Mike; son in-law, Doug Jeffers; grandchildren, Jennifer Price, Rebecca Brooks Be Vier, Jeff Brooks, Russell Corley, David Dahlstrom, and Nealon Jeffers.

Troy was preceded in death by wife, Margaret Ham Compton; parents, David and Elizabeth Compton; two brothers, Edd “Jack” Compton and David Neyland Compton; two sisters, Beatrice Compton Carter and Edna Compton Winans; daughter, Jeanette Compton Jeffers; granddaughter, Amber Corley; and other family members.
