Employees of the T.R. Havins Unit in Brownwood continued their annual tradition of Silver Angels by bringing Christmas to residents of local nursing homes.

This year the Havins Unit employees celebrated with Cross Country Care Center, bringing them gifts along with a visit from Santa.

Anna Kay Tilton, the daughter of one resident sang Christmas songs during the event, setting the mood for a wonderful evening of sharing.  She also stated how much she appreciated the group’s dedication and caring for the residents.

“These guys are wonderful.  They don’t just throw gifts in a bag and hand them out randomly,” said Tilton.  “Do you know what they gave my bedridden mother? …a set of CDs of Southern Gospel Music.”  Tilton explained that an illness approximately a year and a half ago left her mother bedridden and virtually unresponsive, but that listening to Southern Gospel Music helps calm her.

The group focuses on each resident when choosing the gift to be given, often calling nursing home staff or by suggestions made by the residents themselves as to what they need or would enjoy.  Gifts of blankets, gloves, sodas, jeans and boots were just a few of the things residents received from the group.

Dannette Hall, Marketing Director at Cross Country Care Center stated that many of the residents don’t have family and Christmastime can be a very sad time of year for them, but the Christmas party and gifts provided “made their week” and offered some happiness to the residents.

Goodie bags of fruit and candy along with a gift basket for the staff were provided by 3rd grade students at Northwest Elementary.  The goodie bags were brown lunch sacks, hand decorated by the students with colored angels and Santas.
