With only a couple of weeks left in deer season, time is running out to donate a deer to Good Samaritan Ministries’ “The Deer Project”. Already this season, 8,393 pounds of venison has been donated to a project that pairs a local charity with community-minded hunters to put lean protein on the plates of our hungry friends and neighbors in Brown County. The program’s goal for the 2010 hunting season is 12,000 pounds and with friends and family coming together to hunt over the holiday weekend, that goal is within reach.
The Deer Project, in its third year, is a unique program that allows hunters to bring their legally harvested and tagged deer to one of GSM’s participating processors and donate it to “The Deer Project”. GSM then takes the venison and gives it to those in need living in the area.
And this year, GSM has made it even easier for hunters to participate. Through fundraising projects like the Cow Pasture Golf event and donations from faithful supporters, hunters no longer have to worry about calling to check if money is available for processing or footing the bill themselves. This year, GSM will cover the cost of processing. All hunters need do is take the field dressed deer to one of the participating processors and tell them they’d like to donate it to “The Deer Project”.
The processors participating with “The Deer Project” include M&M Processing in Zephyr, Ted’s Deer Processing in Owens and Santa Anna Wild Game Processing in Santa Anna.
The 2009 hunting season brought in 6,049 pounds of meat to the freezers of the Good Samaritan Ministries and ultimately to the plates of the hungry in Brown County. Last year’s harvest provided 24,196 meals!
