Brownwood Fire Department responded to a bee attack in the 1600 block of 10th Street which resulted in three people being transported to the hospital for treatment.
According to Fire Marshal Buddy Preston, the property owners were working to mow the yard late Wednesday evening when they were attacked by a swarm of bees. The male property owner was stung over 80 times and the female property owner and a neighbor were stung over 50 times, said Preston. All three were transported to the Brownwood Regional Medical Center emergency room and released last night.
Preston explained that firefighters arrived on scene at approximately 7:00 p.m. where they stayed until 10:30 p.m. resolving the problem. Fire crews attempted to control the bees with foam spray, but had to eventually seal the hole of the hive, which was located about 12 feet up in a tree.
“We sprayed foam, but when we stopped, they would come back out of the hole in the tree. So we sealed the hole with expanding foam sealer,” explained Preston.
It was not determined what type of bee was involved in the attack but they were obviously “very mad” and aggressive, according to Preston.
