A third candidate has filed in the special election for the recently vacated Ward 2 Brownwood City Council position according to city officials.
Richard Ashton, a Brownwood retiree, filed paperwork with the city to become a candidate in the Ward 2 race. Former Ward 2 City Councilman Ed McMillian turned in his paperwork to become a candidate on Tuesday, and Eddie Watson filed on Wednesday.
The Ward 2 seat was recently vacated by H.D. Jones when he moved from Ward 2 to a new home in Ward 1. The city charter requires councilmembers to step down if they move out of the Ward they represent.
Jones has filed as a candidate for the Ward 1 council seat. He is running against Steven McCrane.
The filing period for candidates in the Ward 2 position runs from March 23, 2010 through April 7, 2010. The special election for the Ward 2 councilmember will be held in conjunction with the regular election on May 8th.
