Brownwood High School students ranging from 9th to 12th grade are rehearsing now for the Brownwood High School musical production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ by L. Frank Baum.  The show follows Baum’s classic story made popular by the 1939 MGM movie and even provides the opportunity for some local elementary students to get some time on stage.

“I wanted a show that could involve some of our elementary students to get them excited about participating in it [theater] in the future. Munchkins were the perfect characters for this,” said Patricia Garrett, director and choir teacher at Brownwood High School. “Looking at the students we had, I felt that ‘The Wizard of Oz’ would help exhibit their talents the best.”

Garrett is working with Keeley Gowin, Assistant Director/Choreographer, and Donnetta Shelton, Artistic Director, to bring the show to life and continues to be impressed with the progress of the cast.

“What stands out about this cast is the musical and character growth that they have had within a short period of time.” Garrett said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  The students bring such life and fun to the characters they are portraying.”

‘The Wizard of Oz’ is scheduled to open on Thursday, January 19th at 7:30 p.m. in the Brownwood High School auditorium with additional performances on Saturday, January 21st at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 22nd at 3:00 p.m.  Admission is $5.00 at the door.
