The exterminator that fumigated the Brownwood home of the recently captured Sunset Monocled Cobra was glad to hear the news of its capture and stated that is was a quicker timeline than expected.
According to Andy Lee, owner of Andy’s Pest Troopers, his company fumigated the home about two weeks ago, setting out large glue traps throughout the home and even crawled under the home in their efforts to rid the home of the unwanted reptile.
“We were the first ones under the house,” said Lee. “We got everything set up so that if it was still there, we could catch it.”
Lee explained that although they couldn’t spray with anything that would harm the snake, their aim was to drive it out with hopes it would get onto one of the glue traps. He also stated that he didn’t turn down the dangerous job because he felt, knowing the habits of snakes in general, they could predict how it would act, not likely staying within a wall of the house. In fact, Lee stated that the homeowners pointed out where they believed the snake went into the structure of the house when it escaped.
After being in and under the home, Lee said he always believed the cobra was still alive, even after a follow-up visit by his employee Cliff Ross.
“I kept telling them (the homeowners) that there was no reason to believe that it was dead,” said Lee. “After we where under the house we found that it wasn’t cold even under the house.”
Lee stated that he thought the 3-4 dogs at the residence and several outdoor cats would have detected the snake even before he and his employees could find it. However, luckily that was not the case and police were able to capture it when its head became trapped on one of the glue strips.
“I’m just glad it’s over,” said Lee. “It came out sooner than I had expected. From beginning to end, the process took about two weeks.”
The Brownwood Municipal Police Association (BMPA) generously donated funds to pay for the herpetologist from For the Love of Nature to make the trip to Brownwood to collect the cobra Thursday afternoon.
