rangercollegelogoThe Texas Senate released their version of the preliminary state budget on Tuesday less than a week after the House released their numbers.

Although the proposals have many similarities, the Senate version does not call for the de-funding of Ranger College and three other state funded community colleges.

Ranger College President Dr. Bill Campion has been vocal since last week’s budget proposal was released stating that closing the college would be very detrimental to its service area. Ranger College has enjoyed rapid growth recently showing an increase of 66% in spring 2010 over the 2009 spring semester.  Ranger College also just launched its much sought after RN program earlier this month.

Lt. Governor David Dewhurst said that savings in the Senate’s version of the budget will be made by cutting specific programs, rather than across the board cuts.

Many of the recommendations will inevitably undergo substantial revision before the 82nd Legislature approves a final budget bill.  Both the House and Senate will meet later in conference committee to work out the differences and help pass a final budget.
