According to Sheriff Bobby Grubbs, on 06/17/2010, Sgt. Lana Guthrie received information from Lee County, Mississippi that Savanna Hood might be in Brown County at a local motel.  A family member from Lee County had concerns for the welfare of Savanna Hood’s child who was reported to be with her.  The concerns were based on the fact that it had been reported that Hood would be in possession of a stolen vehicle, and was accompanied by two male subjects that were suspected in a Burglary of a residence in Marion County, Alabama.

After receiving help from other Brown County Deputies, Guthrie and the Deputies made contact with Hood at the Executive Inn located in Early, Texas.  The 2-year-old boy was found to be in good condition and unharmed.  The occupants of the motel room were identified as Savanna Hood, Brandon Ely, and Billy Ely. They were in the Brown County area visiting family.

After further investigation, the vehicle was confirmed to be legally in Hood’s possession.  A search of the motel room was conducted and Methamphetamine and Marijuana was located in the room.  All three suspects were taken into custody.  A search of the vehicle was conducted and located in the vehicle was electronics, jewelry, guns, ammunition, and old coins.

All of this property was identified as stolen property from the burglary in Marion County, Alabama after contacting the victim of that burglary.  The victims of this burglary were the grandparents of Savanna Hood.

Child Protective Services was contacted and took custody of the child until family members from out of state could come and pick him up.  All three adults were charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Controlled Substance in a drug free zone.  Later in the day the Brown County Jail received additional charges from Marion County, Alabama for Burglary.  These three will remain in Brown County Custody until such time that Marion County can arrange for their transport back to Alabama.

The Early Police Department assisted the Brown County Sheriff’s Office in this incident by providing prisoner security and transport to the Jail.  Sheriff Bobby Grubbs stated that it is believed that if these individuals were not apprehended and remained in this area, Brown County citizens might have been victims of other crimes at their hands.

An arrest in this case gave comfort to a worried family of this child and closure of yet another family who had been victimized by the theft of numerous items from their home.  Many of these items taken were family heirlooms that could never have been replaced.  Arrangements are being made to return the property to its owner.
