Surrogate parent training will take place March 26th from 9 until noon at the Brownwood Independent School District central office. Interested volunteers are needed to represent students in Brownwood, Early, Bangs, Blanket, Brookesmith, Santa Anna, and Zephyr.
A surrogate parent is required when a student’s parents are unknown, when the student is a ward of the state or an unaccompanied homeless youth. Surrogate parents must receive training regarding special education laws, disability criteria, evaluation, and the Admission, Review, and Dismissal process.
Surrogates visit with the student at the school, consult with those involved in the student’s education, review education records, and attend the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee meetings.
A surrogate parent may not be an employee of the Texas Education Agency or a local school district or any other agency involved in the education or care of the student. Educational Service Center 15 personnel are providing the training. If you are interested in supporting a student by volunteering as a surrogate parent or would like more information please contact either Stephanie Adamez at Brownwood ISD, 325-643-5644, or Terri Strength at Heartland Special Education Co-op, 3255-643-6403.
