Three area students were recognized Friday for completing the 21st Century Leadership Program implemented by the county’s Education Workforce Solutions Committee. Certificates of completion were presented to each student by United States Congressman Mike Conaway at the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Friday.
The class set out to equip students to be successful by teaching them various skills to prepare them to enter the workforce. After completing 2 hours of classroom time each week for a period of 9 weeks, the students earned certification of work readiness. These classroom hours were completed on the students’ own time and taught at Texas State Technical College in Brownwood. The classes were instructed by staff from TSTC and the Brownwood Economic Development Corporation, as well as guest business leaders in the community.
According to instructor Ruth Willis, organizers hope that the program will soon broaden its outreach and be instructed at local high schools as a part of the high school curriculum. Conflicts with school activities and transportation are currently limitations faced by many students interested in the program, according to Willis.
