Twenty-three students from Howard Payne University’s Pre-College Music program participated in the recent Texas Federation of Music Clubs State Festival, with many earning high honors. The competition was held on May 21 at Texas State University in San Marcos.
Listed below are the participants and their ratings:
Vocal Solo — All State: Emily Dick; Outstanding: Angie Calfa, Meredith Underwood and Joshua Woods; Superior: Emily Dick.
Piano Solo — All State: Jordan Roberts; Outstanding: Audrey Boren, Athena Brindle, Abe Cooper, Emily Dick, Jessica Harris, Kamry Keese, Emma Grace Quillin, David Woods and Joshua Woods; Superior: Vic Cooper, Savannah Johnson, Devin Keese, Collin Lyons, Sarah Reeves, Sam Woods, and Kate Yantis.
Violin Solo — Superior: Sydney Neel.
Guitar Solo — All State: Robert Dick; Outstanding: Logan Dick and Paul David Quillin.
Sixty-five students from the Pre-College Music program participated in the Junior Festival, held at HPU on March 19. Students earning a “Superior” rating at the Junior Festival were eligible to compete in the state competition.
HPU’s Pre-College Music program, directed by Diane Owens, associate professor of music, is a part of the university’s School of Music and Fine Arts. The program offers Kindermusik classes to pre-school children and lessons in all instruments and voice to school-aged children and adults. This past year, 22 teachers, consisting of HPU music faculty and music majors, taught the 90+ students who were enrolled in the Pre-College Music program.
Enrollment for the Pre-College Music program’s fall semester will begin August 17 and will continue until August 29. Classes begin on September 7. Each semester is 14 weeks in length and consists of one 45-minute private lesson each week plus 30 minutes in the music computer lab. One-hour classes are offered for Kindermusik students.

The Texas Federation of Music Clubs operates in conjunction with the National Federation of Music Clubs.
