A thunderstorm moved through Brown County Wednesday afternoon bringing much needed rain to the area, but caused its share of problems for vehicles, homes, and emergency workers.
Rainfall totals between 2-4 inches were reported across Brown County in less than a two hour period as the storm moved through the area. A flash flood warning was issued for the area as the rain fell and water covered many roadways in Brownwood and Early. Emergency responders received numerous calls to assist stranded motorists.
Emergency workers assisted the following calls during the storm: a stranded motorist in high water on Eastover in Early, a stranded pickup near the Wal-Mart parking lot (pictured above), an elderly female was stranded in a vehicle in high water on Magnolia, complaints of a vehicle driving on Valley View Drive forcing water into some homes, and an overturned vehicle on FM 3100 caused by water on the road with only minor injuries.
Responders were stretched thin during the storm as they battled the rain, high water, and high volume of calls at the same time. The Vine Street underpass was also closed for a time during and after the storm because of high water.
Lake Brownwood caught some water with this storm as well. The Brown County Water Improvement District reports in their afternoon measurement that Lake Brownwood caught .2’ of water in just the initial rainfall, but that level is expected to continue to rise more as runoff from the rain moves into the lake. With this measurement, Lake Brownwood stands at 10.6’ low.
The next significant chance of rain is in the forecast for late next week.
