The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit continues as many talented artists from across the state feature demonstrations over the next two weeks along with the art exhibit. Demonstrations scheduled for Wednesday, February 11th will include Kerry Sawyer, Cindy McCarn, and Kathryn Jones.
Demonstrations will be presented from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. daily on weekdays at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center in Brownwood. Artists will show visitors how to use a variety of different media as well as share interesting techniques.
The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit will continue with daily hours through February 20th at the Depot. For more info, visit Cindy McCarn from Abilene, Texas enjoys painting. Watercolor and acrylics are her medium of choice. Some of her works are mixed media projects. She enjoys mixing different mediums to accentuate different aspects of the piece. At the Stars of Texas Exhibit, McCarn will be demonstrating watercolor on yupo paper (synthetic paper).
McCarn has dabbled in art projects and crafts since childhood, but it wasn’t until she retired from public school teaching that she found unscheduled time to allow her to focus on painting. She currently takes weekly watercolor lessons from Ginger Test. McCarn has taken various workshops from other artists including Carolyn Walker, Jo Beck, Warren Taylor, and Jo Beth Gilliam. Each artist has added to Cindy’s knowledge and abilities.
People often ask McCarn how she decides what to paint. If in a class, she follows the instructor’s suggestions to get the most from the instruction. When painting on her own time, she answered differently, “It just depends on the day. I follow whims and subjects that I like. Most of the things that I paint are subjects from God’s beautiful world of nature.” McCarn’s artwork shows quite a variety of subjects and style, but vivid color is consistently seen.
Kathryn Jones (pictured front left) is a native of San Antonio, Texas who moved to Brownwood with her husband in 2009. She stated that the Brownwood, Texas motto “Feels like home,” rings true to her heart. Jones joined the Brownwood Art Association shortly after settling here and is currently serving her 2nd year as a board member and volunteers on many of the committees. She attributes the expanded interest and variety of medias she now enjoys to the influences of the very talented artists she now calls friends at the BAA. Every month a new artist is featured at the open demonstration at the BAA encourages her to try something new, giving her a greater appreciation of the art world.
Jones is best known for her pencil/charcoal portrait drawings, acrylics, watercolors and pastels. She discovered a hidden talent and love for art later than most artists, when she would volunteer to help her daughters’ schools by drawing pictures for bulletin boards, scenery for Plays and etc. She worked as a paraprofessional in a San Antonio charter school, which forced her to learn more about art and techniques in order to affectively teach Art to High School Students. “I give God all the credit for the success of my students because He qualified me when I was not a qualified art instructor,” says Jones. Most of her work is inspired by her Faith and relationship as a true believer in Jesus Christ. She loves to give pencil portraits of loved ones as a special memorial. “There is something unspeakable in giving a gift that is so personal and meaningful to others, I am always so humbled to use my talent to bless others.” Jones stated.
This is Jones’ second demo for the Stars of Texas featuring Marbleizing with Watercolors. Marbleizing watercolors is a favorite hands-on activity with the school-aged visitors and brings out the young at heart from the more mature. Kathryn said that she is so honored to be asked to be a part of the Stars exhibit this year and to share with young future aspiring artist a new appreciation and love of art into their lives. She would also like to challenge everyone in the community to attend all the demonstrations. There is something there for everyone’s interest and style.
