Brownwood art teacher Julie Mize has been interested for several years in handmade books of artworks and artistic journals. There are endless ways to collect and create artworks in book form, whether by the book’s structure and format, materials used, and themes.
Mize’s demonstration will show examples using collages, books with hand-stitched bindings, travel journals, and a book in progress of embroidered images.
Mize is the art teacher at Brownwood Middle School. She also teaches the darkroom photography course at Howard Payne University. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in art from Howard Payne University and a Master’s degree in art education from Texas Tech University. As a child, she was always interested in drawing, painting, and taking photographs. She was inspired by her elementary art teacher Beth Brubaker of Houston and as early as age 11, Mize had no doubts that she would become an art teacher too.
Primarily a photographer, Mize has had work accepted into the Stars of Texas exhibit many times since 2003, had photographs accepted to Texas Tech University’s annual High and Dry photographic exhibit three years in a row (2012 – 2014), and has also exhibited work in Granbury, Coleman, and Junction, Texas. During the fall of 2015 several of her photographs were part of the Howard Payne University Art Department’s faculty exhibit.
