The Howard Payne University softball team split their double header with the University of Dallas in non conference action on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 in the first game and winning 6-4 in the second.
Howard Payne started off with a homerun by Rebecca McDaniel in the first game. However, Univ. of Dallas quickly answered back with two runs in the top of the second, giving them a 2-1 lead.
Both teams remained scoreless until the final seventh inning when UDallas pulled away, scoring the final run of the game and ending with a 3-1 win.
Mallory Wood went 2 for 3 at the plate, while McDaniel and Haleigh Caraway each recorded a hit for the Lady Jackets.
HPU’s Kayla Castillo would be charged with the loss in her full seven innings of work, while Whitney Thomas would get the complete game win for Univ. of Dallas.
The Lady Jackets bounced back in the second game starting things off with a RBI single from Haleigh Caraway and a RBI double from Justine Farrell-Raborn, giving them a 2-1 lead to end the first inning.
With a pair of RBI singles from Wood and McDaniel in the bottom of the second, HPU increased their lead by two to 4-1.
Although Univ. of Dallas attempted a comeback by scoring three runs to tie it up in the fourth inning, McDaniel quickly put an end to their rally with her second homerun of the day- this time a 2 RBI hit in the bottom of the fourth, moving the Lady Jackets on top 6-4.
No other runs would be recorded on the game, giving Caraway the win for HPU. Whitney Thomas would be charged with the loss for Univ. of Dallas.
Caraway went 2 for 2 with one RBI; McDaniel went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s, and Katie Poerner went 2 for 4. Silva and Wood each recorded a run, while Luna put up two runs for the Lady Jackets.
HPU ends the year with an overall record of 10-25, and 6-18 in the American Southwest Conference. University of Dallas moves to 18-16 on the season.
