The Howard Payne Lady Jacket softball team dropped two games in their double header with Schreiner University on Wednesday, coming up short in the first game 5-3 and 1-0 in the second.
Both teams battled for the lead in the first game, with Schreiner scoring one run in both the first and second innings. The Lady Jackets then matched their score, leaving it tied 2-2 to start the third.
In the bottom of the third, a RBI single into left field by Mallory Wood would send Rebecca McDaniel into score, putting the Lady Jackets up 3-2 to end the inning.
However, Schreiner slowly pulled away with the lead, scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. With HPU unable to answer back in the final seventh inning, the game would end with a score of 5-3.
Kimble Luna went 3-4 on the game with one stolen base, one RBI and scored one run off of a wild pitch.
HPU’s Haleigh Caraway would be charged with the loss in her full seven innings of work, and Rebecca Hay got the win for Schreiner.
In the second game, no scoreboard action was seen until the fourth inning when Schreiner put up the only run of the game. HPU remained scoreless to end the game with a score of 1-0.
Despite the loss, Abigail Hinojos recorded one stolen base for the Lady Jackets, her ninth on the year. Justine Farrell-Raborn, Ashley Silva and Kayla Castillo each recorded hits for Howard Payne.
Kayla Castillo would get the loss for the Lady Jackets, while Schreiner’s Allyson Morris would be credited with the win.
HPU moves to 9-24 on the season and 6-18 in the American Southwest Conference. Schreiner improves to 11-9 in the ASC West and 15-18 overall.
The Lady Jackets will have their last appearance of the year Saturday at home against the University of Dallas in a 1:00 pm doubleheader. Seniors Mallory Wood and Rebecca McDaniel will be recognized for their great commitment to HPU Softball.
