The Howard Payne softball fell short in their double header with the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor on Saturday, losing the first game 8-1 and the second 8-6.
In the first game, UMHB took the two run lead in the second inning and continued to add runs to the board, leaving HPU scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. A Haleigh Caraway double to right center brought in Rebecca McDaniel to score and left the game final 8-1.
Howard Payne’s Kimble Luna went 2 for 4 from behind the plate, while Haleigh Caraway went 2 for 3 with one RBI on the game.
Starting off the second game, a pair of RBI singles from both Ashley Silva and Caraway sent Luna and McDaniel into score for the Lady Jackets, giving them the two run lead early in the first.
UMHB answered back with a run in the second inning, but HPU had no trouble adding four runs to the lead, with McDaniel, Katie Poerner, and Caraway all scoring off of passed balls and a Kellye Wheeler RBI single that brought in Evangelina Tellez for one more.
However, with UMHB putting up two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Howard Payne’s lead fell within one and the 3 RBI triple to left center from Brittany Moreno sealed the deal for UMHB. This left the Lady
Jackets unable to reclaim their lead in the final half of the inning and two behind to end the game.
Both Abigail Hinijos and Silva went 2 for 4 at the plate, while Luna added a double and Rebecca McDaniel scored two runs for the Lady Jackets.
HPU’s Caraway was charged with the loss putting in 5.1 innings of work, while UMHB’s Erica White got the win.
Howard Payne now stands at 3-10 on the year, while Mary-Hardin Baylor moves to 7-5.
The Lady Jackets will travel to Kerrville to take on Schreiner University in a double header starting at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 15.
