The Howard Payne softball team split their double header with Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon losing game one, 5-4, and winning game two, 7-1.
The Lady Jackets led 4-0 after four innings heading into the top of the fifth. The Lady Lobos of Sul Ross put together a four run fifth to tie the game at four. The difference for the Lobos was a solo homerun in the top of the sixth from Betsy Anderson to left center.
Anderson also picked up the win pitching three shutout innings in the final three frames for Sul Ross. Kayla Castillo got the loss for Howard Payne.
Ashley Silva went 2-2 in the game with one RBI. Kimble Luna was 2-3, scoring one run.
In the second game the Jackets were in control throughout the game. Through the fifth the Lady Jackets owned a 3-0 lead. They would things up in the sixth when Rebecca McDaniel hit a triple with the bases loaded knocking in all three runners for the 7-0 lead.
Sul Ross would grab one run in the top of the sixth but that would be all for the Lady Lobos.
Haleigh Caraway pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out three batters for the win. Betsy Anderson for Sul Ross got the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits.
HPU record goes to 7-12 on the year and 4-6 in the American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross State falls to 1-24 overall and 1-11 in the ASC action.
The Lady Jackets next set of games will be in Seguin, April 1 & 2 against Texas Lutheran University.
