On Saturday, January 12th, six members of the Brownwood High School Prose and Poetry team competed in the Breckenridge UIL Invitational Meet. All six advanced to the finals in their events and placed as follows: In the category of Prose, Kimberly Boswell-1st place, Caitlyn Morris-3rd place, Caitlin McGraw-5th place, and Megan Pointer-6th place. In Poetry, Natalie Mayo-2nd place, and Megan Pointer-6th place.
The students prepare for their UIL meets with workshops held during the weeks they compete and occasionally on off weeks.
“These workshops last two to three hours and the kids work on cutting selections and perfecting them,” said Larry Mathis, BHS theatre teacher. “They then read to each other and we critique the performances as a group.”
The selections that are performed are either researched and picked by the student, or chosen with help from the UIL coaches.
“Some of the students research and find their own. Others, I help them find new pieces either online or from digging in libraries,” said Mathis. “We also have a backlog of previous material.”
The next meet the team is scheduled to attend will be in Glen Rose, January 25th.
