The 2010-2011 United Way campaign is officially underway as many in the community gathered on Tuesday at Howard Payne University for the official kickoff luncheon. Speaking at the luncheon was Brownwood High School Athletic Director Bob Shipley.
The goal for this year’s campaign is $325,000, and United Way volunteers and board members are hopeful that the community will come together to achieve it.
Shipley talked about how life is not fair to most people, but by giving to United Way, community members can help make a difference.
“Life’s not been fair to a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to be that way,” Shipley told the audience. “Through your gift and through your support, you can help them overcome the unfortunate situation they might be in.”
The United Way is a team that helps support 15 charities in the Brownwood area. Each of these agencies are important to the community, and through a group effort, they are all able to receive assistance from the community through the United Way.
Agencies locally that are a part of the United Way are:
- Small World Child Development
- Salvation Army Loaves and Fishes
- Pearl Griffith Memorial Latch Key Program
- Mid-Tex Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse
- Girl Scouts of Central Texas
- The Family Services Center
- C.A.S.A.
- Cancer Services Network
- Brown County Association for Retarded Citizens
- Brown County 4-H Club
- Boy Scouts of America Texas Trails Council
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- The Ark Domestic Violence Shelter
